If my WL server is installed on C:\WebLogic8\..., does it make more sense to
put my applications' .ear/.war files at a different location or does it make sense to put them inside C:\WebLogic8\... ?

It is preferable to put them under the server directory. I dont see any reason why does one need top put them outside the server install directory.
