Does anyone have comments on the best way to deploy a POJO Service Activator to an App Server so that it can be stopped/started fairly easily?

Conceivably I could just go with an MDB, but I'm trying to stay away from EJB at the moment (although I suspect most people do it this way).

Doesn't the Service Activator pattern require JMS (hence probably MDB), since its purpose is to handle asynchronous requests to star a service?

MDB does indeed use JMS. However, any Java class can use JMS outside of a J2EE container...
