Well, read the website to learn about a company--but a website is like a resume, no one ever writes a bad one.

I typically ask things like company culture and value, working hours, direction of the company and plans for the next 6-24 months, what type of career track they would have for you, training programs, etc.

Most of the company websites are just like marketing their services the way you expose your qualification and other things in your resume.

You can ask questions like what kind of project you are going to work, whats their working culture, timings, what skill set they are looking etc.,. You can ask what kind of role you are going to play if you are selected. Also you can ask questions like what is their appraisal cycle, whats their bonus policy etc.,

If you find website very attractive/rich then they have spent good amount of money on creating that... that's all you can know from website.

or you can ask in Java Ranch Jobs Discussion.

Or you can join any community or talk to your seniors. If I would be at your place then I would like to same things as above mentioned.

I ask HR, the hiring manager, and anyone else who interveiws me. I never ask open ended questions (e.g. culture) of just one person, because while hte HR person may tow the party line, a line engineer may have a very different perspective. Heck, for the startups I work with even asking "where will the company be in 24 months" of 4 different people will often yield 4 different answers.

I'm not sure what "bad thing" you think I was referring to.
