Hi,

Can somebody let me know work culture of Singapore? I have been selected as a permanent employee for one of the UK based Investement Banks in Singapore. The nature of work is executive in JAVA & J2EE domain.

Please share your experience about work culture in Singapore.

Thanks

Regards,

Kandy

I worked in Singapore for almost 7 years as a Java/J2EE Developer. People tend to work long hours there. I felt work places lacked efficiency. One notable difference is that I have not seen smart developers throughout my career there, only a few good once worth taking note of.

Now I work in Australia and I can clearly see the difference in work cultures. Here people have more respect for one another, more prfessional, do not work long hours, know how to balance personal life with professional life. Most importantly I have seen very smart people and working with them has been an absolute pleasure.

It is surprising. I was expecting the work culture at Singapore to be similar to US/Europe (since it is a developed economy). But from what you have mentioned, it resembles culture of Indian service companies.

I believe that work culture depends on specific company; we cannot generalize a country as a whole. For example employers likes Barclays Capital maintain good work culture, means fixed working time (not my experience, I got feedback from one of friend). The same may not be true for other company. Also, it depends on project Phase. If SIT/UAT goes on, then it can eat you weekends. I met with a lot of smart and knowledgeable people. Overall, I find Singapore is a good place to work. You can give a try

Is it good to shift from India to Singapore for work?

My previous laptop never exploded like that. Read this tiny ad while I sweep up the shards.
