Is it too long or is ok?

That depends on the person who recruits you. Generally speaking 2 months is too long.

Most of the companies have a notice period of two months , but many of them are planning to increase this to three months. For example a company in Bangalore (not telling the name for the moment) had a notice period fo two momths.Untill last year it used to relieve people in one momths only.Last year they came with a decision that they would accept the resignation of professional immediately but he/she has to serve a strict 2 months notice period and guess what ?
The ateration rate decreased , so from this year they are planning to increase the notice period to three months.
see this works.

I hv given joining date to a company after 3 months (not telling the company name here). they accepted it very normally... though earlier they were forcing to join next day itself (they were ready to pay bong for my current company)... so it depends on company to company and to the manager recruting you

I'm not quite sure what a joining period is. I'm also note sure what country you're in.

I can say that in the US, the whole interview process can take anywhere from a few days to a few months depends on role and level. Sometimes people start as quickly as the next day after accepting an offer. Other times people need to give notice at their current job (typically two weeks, although sometimes more, especially for senior or critical roles), and/or possibly relocate, take a vacation, spend time with kids, or do other personal things between jobs. Two months doesn't seem extreme if there is a job to be left and relocation involved. It does seem a bit long if the person is local and unemployed. Ultimately, I think if someone has a good reason for the delay, the company will listen and understand, unless there is a direct loss of revenue while the role is open.

Most of the post were posted keeping in mind the country India.
In US I have found the many people continue 10 years or more in one company. But the indian job market is very greedy. In 10 years people change nearly 7-8 companies. So here the notice period is quite strict and you get hardly anytime in between the switch for your personal matters. You again take leave after you are setteled in your new company.

The problem in giving so long joining period is that the person can use the current offer to get a better offer. I have seen people negotiating like I have X company offer for 10Lakhs so i expect at least 12 from you.

My Company ( Not telling name ) has notice period of three months. Initally they used to relieve people in month also. But now they strictly ask for 3 months notice period. Still they are failing to retain people.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
