Mike and Merrick-

At JavaOne this year there was a lot of talk about EJB 3.0 in general, but there was also a lot of buzz about how the changes would affect tools (Eclipse, Netbeans, etc) used for development of EJBs. Do you have anything in your book that addresses the use of these tools to ease and increase the speed of development?

Thanks,
Joshua Smith

Good question. We actually had it as a goal when we were developing the EJB 3.0 spec, to allow development of EJB 3.0 components and entities without having to use tools. I think we succeeded, but that doesn't mean that people won't want to use tools, just that they don't have to.

Eclipse does already have the Dali project for EJB 3.0. I think NetBeans is doing something for EJB 3.0 as well, but I don't know how far they are with it. We don't discuss tools in the book because there was nothing to talk about at that point, really.
