Just because a company acquires another company doesn't mean the acquired company ceases to exist - it could if the purchasing company wanted to merge with them. However they may just be purchasing a service they need. Then all expenses the parent company pays for that service wind up as operating expenses and profits to the acquired company.
Under this mode of operation it would definately be possible to move back and forth between companies. I'm not sure how transparent it would be. I worked for a large company that split the software development division into its own company, all employees in IT were shifted to the newly formed wholly-owned subsidiary.
