Hi all

just wanted to know what do you all think is the difference between the terms Specification, framework, and patterns.

i think there is some sought of a super set and sub set relation here.

Actually, they are more unrelated. Some Frameworks might implement a Specification, like some JSF Reference Implementation. And Some Frameworks will definitely use some Design Patterns in its design. But Design Patterns are also used outside of any kind of spec or framework.

J2EE Spec does not have any Frameworks that implement the spec.

A Spec is a set of documents, that someone outside of that creates implementations of it.

A Design Pattern is simply a design to solve a problem that has been used many times over to solve that problem.
