I have got 4.3 years of Work Exp with 2.5 yrs in java/j2ee in a reputed indian MNC. I started my carrier from this orgnization. My current package is 3.5 l.p.a. which I think is horribly low compared to other orgnizations. I have not been to onsite a sigle time over this period. I want to make a switch. What kind of average package can I expect at this point of time incase I have to negotiate? I have done MCA as distance eduation from Annamalai university. Will that make any difference in the package I can get compared to those who have done regular MCA at this point of time? I have done SCJP 1.4 with 94% marks.
Kindly advice, thanks in Advance.

Definitely not more than this. This is a high package for you. Doesnt matter if you have 10 certifications. There is a biiiiiiiig difference between regular MCA and postal MCA as they say in TamilNadu "Corress MCA".

My advice to you is to stay in this company itself for the existing pay is high enough.

Oops sorry, I read your experience as 2.5 yrs. Ok, in that case 4.5 lacs would be a reasonable and judicious pay.

My appraisal is due on at june-july cyle, and I'm expecting my package to be around 4.5 itself Would it make sense to wait for around 4 months more and then move on

Dont know how much your MCA will help you since it is correspondence course.Wait there for the appraisal ,till then you will be 3.0 years experienced guy in J2EE so that you can have a better bargain when you move ..

I have 4.5 years of experience in J2EE. I am a B.Sc graduate without any post graduation degree I do have Java 5.0 certification.

With all this, I got an offer from an European company for 7 LPA.

Think then..

Shyam,

I certainly think you can do better, a distance ed- MCA would be a bit of disadvantage but if you are able to prove your worth during the selection process you can easily expect 5+ L package. A bit would also depend on your communication skills, location, kind of role you want, and whether you are willing to go for a smaller firm and leave the big firms.

one more thing, you should certainly wait for your appraisal to be done and over with. In general one can negotiate a 30-50% hike from your current salary at starter/mid-level positions (developer/ sr. developer)
