Hai ,
Can some body explain few real world applications that J2EE technologies are used? I got this as an interview
Question and as a beginner I told online banking and shopping site. Is j2ee too complicated for this purpose ?

J2EE is broad by itself. Though the examples you have provided does makes sense, ideally J2EE is used when your application needs
- to scale
- be secured
- involves heavy transactions
- needs object to be persisted in relational database
