Hi, would there be any real life example in your book?

I am more interested in the actual operational capabilities of glassfish in production environment rather than using it for development only.

Tony,

I believe there are essentially two approaches to presenting examples in a book. Both approaches have pros and cons.

One approach is to build a "realistic" application in the examples. Typically this is accomplished by building the same application throughout the book. The advantage of this approach is that the end of the book, there is a "finished product" which should be close to a real life application. When using this approach, the example is simple in the beginning of the book, but keeps getting more complicated as the book moves along. Additionally, if a reader is interested in learning about a topic that is discussed in, say, chapter 5, the examples in that chapter are typically hard to follow without having read the first four chapters.

The second approach is to present simple, focused, self contained examples. The advantage of this approach is that the chapters in the book do not have to be read in sequence in order to understand them, and they tend to be simpler and easier to follow. The disadvantage of this approach is that the examples tend not to be complex enough to be considered realistic applications.

I chose the second approach since I wanted the examples to focus on illustrating one particular concept at a time, without "cluttering" them with irrelevant code/markup/configuration. I also didn't want to "force" the reader to read the book chapters in sequence.

Regarding your comment about operational capabilities of GlassFish, I'm not really sure what you mean. The book is about developing Java EE 5 applications using GlassFish. Developing the code is the same regardless of if it is being deployed to a development, test or production server.
