I am in a dilemma regarding my posts in Javaranch. In my free time I browse internet and one of my activities is visiting Javaranch.

We use so much of open source and free stuffs , but very few ways to help this community.I am not much capable enough to contribute of open source projects at the moment due to my limitations in knowledge in the field of java and time constraint. But I wanted to contribute to the open source community. I picked up joining Javarnach and replying to posts.

I have not worked in much of technologies, but I reply to posts where I feel that my reply might help the original poster in someway (Though I might have never worked in that area). Many times I found the my replies are misleading (by reading other posts by fellow ranchers) and is not of much use to the original poster.

At this point I can follow two paths:
  • Only answer to questions which I am very confident about and have faced a similar issue in my real experience.
  • Keep doing the same as I am doing now.No matter if some of the my posts are misleading.

  • What you feel I should be doing ?

We actually have a guide that answers these questions.
    http://faq.javaranch.com/view?HowToAnswerQuestionsOnJavaRanch

In particular, this one seems to fit the bill.
    http://faq.javaranch.com/view?AdmitWhenYouAreGuessing

We've all been corrected when we either word something wrong or are just plain wrong. If you think you might have a solution that could help someone, by all means chime in. Just make sure you let them know when you're not sure if you've got it right.

And... by the way, I think your posts have been very helpful in the forums where I hang out. I hope you continue to contribute.

I think your recent post in the HTML forum is a good example: you admitted that you hadn't used GWT but that you thought it looked cool. That adheres to the policy nicely. You didn't imply that you had more knowledge about GWT than you did.

The fact that others (like myself) who had actually used GWT and think that it's not "all that" chimed in later does nothing to make the opinion you stated incorrect or misleading.

    Rahul,

Thought it might be a delayed reply, but i have also felt that the way you post your thoughts sounds reasonable and valid and no way deviated from the track.

I am not just saying with respect to a single forum but almost all the forums i have seen your posts in the similar fashion.

    Keep up the good work.

Lets learn and help others learn too!

That depends on the individual i think. I sometimes "try" to answer if i have a little knowledge on the topic but with the appropriate supplimentary words like "i think" or "i guess" which would say my expertise level to the OP.

But i tend to "work out" the programs or concepts most of the times just before replying unless its pretty much confirmed and proven fact.

Yours is a very different track. Absolutely fine. You can be rest assured.

Keep doing the same as I am doing now.No matter if some of the my posts are misleading.

Why not? Please keep contributing your best!

One good aspect of this JavaRanch sheriffs, moderators, and bartenders which i really admire is "keeping track of almost all posts and mending the bends whereever we might have left out". Thank you Mods...

In such case, i would say that we also would come to a position wherein we would be able to really guide people with the confirmed-and-perfect answers as we gradually grow thereby not taking the help of sheriffs for granted!!

Do i stand valid? Hope so..
