Is there way to run a java program as a daemon or process that doesn't tie up the command line once executed? Similar to say starting the mysqld or apachetl start commands.
Well, you could use the Runtime exec() method to start a new Java process. I'm pretty sure the original Java process could exit after that. It would be a whole new JVM. It's not a good cross-platform solution though, because exec() can be very platform dependant. You could make the parameters of the exec() call configurable through a local file, I suppose. Works if the user has some technical aptitude.
