Need advice on onsite UK with baby

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hello Friends!!

Well, we are expecting!! And we have denied all the travelling to the best of our abilities.

But at the same time the truth is that - the financial responsibilities are also building up. Plus everyone keeps telling us - "kids are expensive"!

So, we are thinking of taking up an opportunity when our child is say 5/6 months old. The opportunity has been there for quite a while and it is totally dependent on our YES.
We are not rocking the boat as of now as the baby is not yet born. I will be taking a year's break from work after the baby.. and hence can go along with my husband as his dependent when the baby is 5/6 months old and stay with him for some 7/8 months.

This all is ok in theory. We dont know what will actually happen when the baby is born. We have thought of only one thing - that time we will ask the doctor and then take the final decision. The baby remains the priority.

However, Im sure there will be many angles that we have not thought of. Or even dreamt of!

Need help of all those out there with the experience of babies and relocating with them.

Regards,
Tina

Congrats Tina,

I have relocated from one state to other when I was expecting.
It was tiring but I took good care as well.
I am in US and mainly people deliver baby here since citizenship is by birth here.I dont know about UK.
Moving with 5 month old baby wont be a problem if you have good support of family and friends. All you need to do is to take care in the flight, take good quantity of baby supplies.
I dont think there would be any trouble.
All the best.

Thanks Preeti!

Your words have given me lot of comfort.
I wont be travelling all alone as Im planning to fly with my hsuband. So I guess we will be able to take care.

We would prefer the baby to be born in India. I agree, its not a preference of many Indians now a days. But its sheer personal preference.

Regards,
Tina

Well, what I want to know are all the practical issues. Im sure there are some things which we wont know being the new parents.

Also I heard kids catch some viral infections in UK. Like herpis [hope I spelled it right]..
These are not in India. So I was a bit worried about that also.

Tina

Tina has the right to have her question answered without being sidetracked. I have cleared the distractions and will do so again if required.

Hi Tina,

I've never been to the U.K. or India, but I have some experience with relocating a child - my wife and I adopted a 2yr old from China and brought her to the U.S.A. in 2005.

We were able to find a physician here who had a special interest in foreign born adopted children. He was able to tell us about things we had never thought of (I had never heard of scabies - a small parasite insect that attatches to the skin), and helped prepare us for what might happen. Your physician should be able to do the same, or at least provide you with some resource material.

as far as herpes (you almost had it right!!), I wouldn't worry about it. There are a couple different strains - read the wiki page here. Most of the ones your child could get are minor, the serious ones they will not be exposed to.

No matter what country you are in, there will be different diseases to worry about. I'm sure there are some diseases in India your child would not be exposed to in the U.K., and the same for the U.S., Argentina, Russia, Australia, or anywhere else.

When we brought our daughter home, she was sick for about a year with colds, runny noses, and ear infections. According to my sister (who is a pediatrician), that's about how long it takes for them to build up immunity to the local diseases. Tubes took care of the ear infections. Of course, now she has allergies to stuff that doesn't exists in China, but there she'd have been exposed to a lot of pollution...

I guess my advice would be to not worry about your child getting sick. He or she will get sick no matter where you are. The chances of it being something SERIOUS are small, and I would think the same no matter where you are. What you need to be sure of is that you can find a good doctor in either location, who can make sure they get the care and treatment they need.

Hi,

Congrats!.

Medical services in UK is provided by NHS which is a free service. And registering yourself in good NHS hospital depends on the county were you will be moving in to. And I lived there for some time and I know not all NHS hospital provide the same (good) service. And during your pregnancy period you will be periodically checked by mid wives and not any specialized doctors. Yes there are private hospitals available but it will be too expensive.

I would advice you to have your baby delivered in India and may be after 3 months you can move to london. And also delivering your baby in UK does not mean that he/she would get british citizenship like US.

If I remember correctly herpes is supposed to be an S.T.D. I don't think an 5 month old baby would have to worry about this. And about immunity to viruses if he is born in India then believe me there is nothing to worry about. the germs out here are far worse
I forgot too. congrats in advance!

Ravi, David and Chunnard,

Thank you all for your wishes!

David, Thanks for creating a possibility to fetch help on my query.

Ravi, If Im not mistaken one has to register for NHS, right? What if my baby need medical attention till my registration and all is done? Registration must be needing sometime for the process.. any idea how long it takes? or does that also depend on which county you are going to?

Chunnard, there are many types of herpes I guess. Some can spread through air. Like stated here.

Regards,
Tina

Hi Tina,
I am living in the UK for the past 6 months with my 2 year old daughter.
The registration process is fairly straight forward. It does not take any processing time as such. Once you have moved into your residence(not temporary residence like hotel) you would need to contact the nearest NHS surgery (local clinic run by NHS). You will be asked to fill in a registration form and once its done, you are a member of that surgery. It might take a couple of weeks to get yourself an NHS number..but that does not stop you from getting your kid seen by a doctor. Since you are talking about a baby which is less than an year old, there will be health visitors coming to your home to visit the baby. Vaccinations are more or less similar to India. You can carry the vaccination list of the baby and the surgery will compare it against the standard UK vaccination list and will give you a book with furhter instructions.
Apart from Surgerys (for routine checkups), you can always ring 999 for any kind of Emergency services.

Badari

You are right. May be that is what I expected but refused to accept on my own. The small discomfort due to travelling and all WILL be there.

Also, as you said knowing more about the foreign diseases may give me some idea about their symptoms and better equip me guard my baby against it. I somehow really did not occur to me to check it on to google.. which is really strange as googling something has kind of become a second nature.

Thank you Fred And sorry for the late reply. Yesterday I got exhausted and could not remain seated for long. So I decided to reply you today.

Let me also congratulate you and your wife. Adopting a child is a noble deed. And not not easy too.

Thanks again for your help.

Tina

Thank you Badari. I was wondering if someone will even see my child when the registration process is going on. If we make it a point to start the registration process as soon as we can, there will be less such days where we wont have the medical help for the baby.

Thanks a lot!

Tina

Well foot and mouth seems to be back. Judging from that image it seems it gives cows the ability to defy all laws of gravity by jumping 20 feet into the air. sorry I know this isnt MD. but I saw this thread slipping down a few places to no. 6.

Congtatulation on the Baby Tina!

You should be fine taking the baby along with you, if you have the meens to get a 1 bedroom apartment for the length of the contract I would recomend that. A Stroller, High Chair, Crib and Car Seat these are the main things you will need. Any more is excess and a lot to move around.
At 7-8 months baby may be crawling and tracing. I liked having carpet on the floors just for that, it makes the bumps hurt less.

You are not going to need that much space, but a lot of energy.

Get as much sleep as you can.

Thank you Joe! Your tips were very practical and will be a lot of help to me.

Thanks to all once again!
