Dear Ranchers -

This site is great! Most of my reading has been on the Java beginner's forum, since I'm a beginner, but the other forums where I've followed questions look just as good! Many many thanks to the moderators and others who work so hard - and so successfully - to help the rest of us!

Also - I'm personally quite happy that folks keep posting homework problems - they're great practice since the "teach yourself" books that I'm learning from don't include the standard many "exercises" at the end of each chapter that textbooks do. And I completely agree with your policy about providing solutions for homework - I really don't want to work with someone who didn't do his own work in class, since he probably will try to avoid doing his own work in the workplace as well ...

You should definitely check out our Cattle Drive assignments.

Gregg - I would love to take part in the Cattle Drive, but I thought it cost money - ?

It does if you want your assignments to be nitpicked. It cost nothing if you just want to do the assignments.

And, of course, the assignments and their solutions should not be discussed in these forums. That's because it spoils the fun for those who have paid to be whipped into shape in the Cattle Drive.

Gregg and Barry -

Thanks so much for "rubbing my nose" in the Cattle Drive - especially since I managed to find Just Java 2 in one of the public libraries around here. My book budget is terminally overdrawn!

The Cattle Drive assignments are very nice and the book is great! Since every author handles the material somewhat differently, I've found that I gain new understanding of a lot of the basic concepts by reading a different author's "take" on material that I thought I already knew ...

That's for sure! Even reading the same book a second (or third) time can be insightful, after you've gained some additional perspective.
