Hi Satou,

I was not aware that you have changed your name to Christophe. Without knowing this fact, i asked you (Christophe) to clarify an aspect in one of the threads. Then later once i was just browsing the threads, i found out when i jumped into the "Introducing new bartenders" thread where i saw this change as

Christophe Verre (formerly Satou Kurinosuke)

Any specific reason behind this? Apologies if i missed out your earlier post for the same if any.

I don't get the meaning of the term 'Japtised' Arjun.

Few of my searches in internet were also unsuccessful on the same.

The JavaRanch naming policy requires that the name not be obviously ficticious. This means that it must sound real, and if it is fake, it should not be advertised as such.

For moderators, the policy is a bit more strict. It must be *real*.

So... For any moderators aspirants reading this. Use your real name. It will make everything easier when you become a moderator...

Then do you mean to say, "Satou Kurinosuke" was not *real* ?

I was also a victim in this case when i initially had my name in full "Raghavan alias Saravanan Muthu" which is officially present in my Passport and all other certificates but got denied in JavaRanch as it was mistaken as a *ficticious* one. [In passport, they had an alternative term 'alsoknownas' for 'alias'. Don't know why and how it happened!]

Though i agreed with them and changed my name in a non-controversial way, i am still thinking a way to let the people know that the names are NOT FICTICIOUS! Probably sending a scanned copy of passport would do?

I think this happens because of the variation on naming conventions across the locale!

Was the same case with Satou also?

Raghavan,

I don't think the challenge was due to your actual name portion being ficticious. Unless "alias" is really part of your name. The naming policy also specifies that your name be as first name, a space, and last name. In this regard, I don't see anything wrong with "Saravanan Muthu" or "Raghavan Muthu".

But "Raghavan alias Saravanan Muthu" should get challenged...

Thanks Henry.

Yes, it is really a part of my name which happened to be given in the year 1981 when computers were not omnipresent.

Thats why i had kept the second alternative you given.

But "Raghavan alias Saravanan Muthu" should get challenged...

Why exactly? Even then the seem-to-be-suspicious-term "alias" is actually a part of my name, does it deserve to be challenged?

Though my intention is not to keep my name in full for display, i would like to bring to your notice that the policy on finding the portion of the name being ficticious does not seem to fit exaclty in my scenario atleast. Its my humble opinion.

The reason might be as i already said the naming conventions differ across the countries.

Really? Send me the scanned documents (in private message) and I'll let all the mods know that the name is valid.

I am actually on my way out at the moment, but I can look at it tonight (it's morning here).

Hope this helps,
Henry

I doubt whether the intention of my post got deviated. Was Satou not the real name then? In that case it was not ficticious either as he was using that name for quite a long in JavaRanch.

Does JR get a proof of the *real* name and insist the same to be used here when a person becomes a moderator or bartender?

Out of my curiosity in getting to know the things, i am asking this. I think i have not crossed my limits anyways. If so, my sincere apologies for the same.

No. but the people who are asked to be moderators are usually the kind of people who when asked to do something would comply. It probably came up in a private conversation (yes, the moderators contact each other outside of the javaranch). something like:

Hey Satou, wanna be a moderator?

Sure!!! By the way my real name is Christophe.

Great! would you mind using your real name, being a moderator and all?

No problem!!!

That would be quite obvious as their experience with JR go!

Thank you Fred!

It is also a slightly longer story, and Christophe's to tell if he feels like it, but essentially the first was not obviously fictitious as it was the name he was 'officially' known as outside the Ranch. I was already aware of the difference, but both names fit both the naming rule and the intent of the naming rule so there wasn't an issue.

I could somehow make it out by the replies of Henry and Fred. But was not aware of that 'officially-known-outside-the-Ranch'.

Thank you David.

As David said, Christophe would be the best one to tell the story but...
To the best of my recollection, he told us that, after moving to Japan, he adopted a Japanese name. In other words, that was his name, both on and off the ranch, while he was in Japan.

Also, if I remember correctly, it was his idea to change his screen name back to his given, French name.

I really feel sorry about the confusion. Yes, as Ben said, I have decided to use "Satou" as my login name first. It is a real Japanese name, but it is not my real name. Since I have become a bartender, I have felt that I should use my real French name instead. I was aware that it could bring confusion, and I sincerely apologize for that. I hope you will get used to it

Raghavan: I don't get the meaning of the term 'Japtised' Arjun.

Most likely it's Arjun's invention, made by glueing together "Java" and "baptized".

Probably, because of the term "getting used" . After a while i think we ALL would get used to the new name 'Christophe'.

But a couple of times i have used K&B's term of mixing-the-related-terms-as-a-single-world like this -> "Satou-now-Christophe".

Hope there are no issues with you Christophe!
