that's a VERY broad question.
Here's a tutorial from Sun that will hopefully get you started:
Tips for LDAP users.
I'm sure if you do a bit of searching on Sun's website you'll find some other very useful information on LDAP and Java and what you can do with it.

I did something like that before, 2-3 years ago. I refered to this book:

LDAP Programming with Java, by Rob Weltman and Tony Dahbura
ISBN: 0201657589

Its abit old, published in 2000 by Addison-Wesley. But it is good for a beginner in LDAP, has good examples & the authors are very responsive. It might just be the book to get you started with.
you should be able to get it from Amazon.
