Has anyone thought of a Java de-5-izer, an app that will take a Java5 program and generate the pre-Java5 equivalent (something like the erasure mechanism implemented for generics.)

Has anyone come across such a tool or concept enunciation??

I wish I could remember what it's called, but there's an existing project -- hosted on sourceforge, I think, so you could search there -- that has created a Java 5 compiler that targets the JDK 1.4 VM.

I haven't tried this, but it should work

Compile your code with -target of 1.4. Then de-compile with your favorite decompiler (Jad etc..)

Should work. Wouldn't transfer javadoc etc of course

Nope. You can't use Tiger features while compiling with -target 1.4.
