I still like PhpBB as the best forum software. As for ideas for this forum, you can read about...

here (found it!)....

http://faq.javaranch.com/view?NewForumSoftware

JavaRanch itself is long overdue for a change, when it will happen, who knows...

You can store posts in a database (as, for example, mvnForum does) or you can store them in flat files (as, for example, UBB does.) You can store posts as plain text, or as HTML, or as XML, or... it's entirely up to you.

My advice is, by the way, to first look at all the available Java forum software first. If you find an open-source one that's close to what you need, but not quite, then volunteer and fix it. Writing a useable forum package from scratch is a large undertaking, and writing a good one is even harder. Don't waste your time reinventing the wheel.

Check jforum.

Download it and disploy it. It's OpenSouce.

Still if you want to develop, download the source code and understand the design.
