Sending Mails getting delayed

In my project, have a requirement of sending mails to 3500 mail ids. The logic has been written and its working fine but it takes lot of time that sometimes, server gets hanged.

The mail sending happens, 3500/75 times and each time, 74 mails are added in BCC. Is there any method to cut short this?

Need help regarding this.

Not that I will be very helpful here, but a couple questions occur to me...

...is it supposed to add 74 addresses to BCC each time?
...how long is a long time (that the server hangs)?
...are you positive the mail code is working properly?
...is it possible to maybe see some of the relevant code? Maybe some extra eyes on it can see something that you overlooked.
