Hi,

Im having the following problem.

Im working in a product based company say XYZ for around 4 years in Java/J2EE platform and im getting "X" sal per annum. Now i get an offer from another product based company say "PQR" which is much popular than "XYZ". "PQR" conducted two telephonic rounds and I performed well in both. But the problem is they are asking me to work on PHP. I said i dont know even the basics of Php and its really tough for me to change the stream. But my HR said they will pay me "2X" per annum and will train in PHP. Inorder to proceed for further rounds i have to take a decision now.

I dont have any problem in my present company but Im not paid high and there is no onsite offers.

Is it good for me to take a different line for money alone? Wont it affect my life in the long run?

Please help me with your thoughts to sort out the issue.

Peter.

Welcome to JavaRanch.

How satisfied are you in your current position? Do you think the other company has the parts that are missing from your current position, and not too many drawbacks that you currently aren't facing? Money alone doesn't buy job satisfaction.

In order to proceed for further rounds i have to take a decision now.

I don't understand this. What kind of decision would be required before further interviews, provided both sides are still interested?

Thanks for your reply Dittmer.

Im pretty much satisfied with my current employer with respect to my work. The only problem is I dont have onsite and salary is not high compared to that of my level of experience.

I don't understand this. What kind of decision would be required before further interviews, provided both sides are still interested?

PQR conducted only two rounds of phone interview. In one of that, they asked me whether im interested to work in PHP. I said, I've been working in Java/Ajax and I dont have interest to change my stream. They said only if you are willing to work in PHP, we will proceed with further rounds of interview. I said its a tough decision for me to tell now and asked them to give some more time. I have to update them within coming Monday so as to proceed for further rounds.

I know PQR is a very big product based company and have a good name in the industry compared to ABC.

So for company name and Salary, is it good to switch to PHP from Java/Web technologies. Will it be a problem in the long run? as the work experience in Java is 4 years and PHP in "X" years.

Peter.

I think that if you go and learn PHP at the new company that it can be a very good thing. Learning new industry leading technologies is never a bad idea, especially when it comes with a double in Salary, working with a company that has a higher profile that your current one, and you can see no major things wrong with the new company. You say you don't want to change stream, I have to ask why? Java isn't going anywhere, and you can still do some projects in your spare time to keep up with it and stay sharp. Then in another 4 years you'll have lots of Java experience and 4 years of PHP. You'll be surprised at what you will be able to do with your future with credentials like that.

From the information you have given us, unless the job you are in right now is the utmost dream job, I would tell them you'll learn PHP and hop on board. Learning PHP will only give you an even better understanding of what is out there and how different systems work. And after working in PHP for a while you be able to decide which one is REALLY the one you like best.

Its totally up to you, but I see great advantages in picking up PHP.

Im not saying its a bad idea to learn PHP. Im much interested to learn new things everyday and thats the reason I love my current job as Im working more on Java/JSP/Servlets/Ajax etc.,

I personally feel PHP can be learned within few months and there is nothing much to do with that for years. My only concern is whether I will get stagnated with my learnings after I learnt PHP. I asked the new company HR whether I will be assigned a new product if I learnt PHP fully. She said it cannot be assured and depends upon my product manager and the assignments.

You can learn pretty much any language and have some working knowledge of it in a couple months. But just like anything else, it takes a great amount of time to learn its nuances. I think you under estimating the complexity and power of PHP. It is a different kind of power than you get from Java based technologies, but there is no shortage of things to learn just as there is no shortage of things to learn from the Java technologies. The only thing that can stagnate your learning is you. Some jobs are more challenging and FORCE you to learn new skills, but if your new job becomes less of a challenge it doesn't mean you have to stop learning...

I did a FUN project in PHP very long back and am able to grasp all of the concepts of PHP within few weeks. Hence im bit concerned on moving to new job which doesnt show up a new challenge.

Anyhow my straight question is "Is it good to change job from Java to PHP"

Only if it will make you happy. If you are going to be miserable then you have to decide if a little bit of time at a crappy job is worth double the money at a job you like until you can find a job that will be fulfilling.
