Hi Sunz,

I understood your situation. Did they told you anything about the project
or atleast the technology in the project during your interview? Or did you ask them about project or technology?

If they told you that its Java based then you can ask them to change the project. If either parties not communicated on this matter probably you have two ways.

1. Taking it as a challenge and learning PL-SQL and showing them that
you are competent.

2. Request them to change project if they don't act consider chaning job.

Decide best option which fits you.
Hope this helps.

hi surya,

during my interview, i took one written test which was completely JAVA based, not even a single question of Oracle, also at the time of interview they did not tell me about the project, I clearly told them at the time of interview that i m a java resource. actually even my interest is not in Oracle, I want to be in JAVA. I have already put a lot of effort to learn JAVA, if i start learning PL/SQL, it will take time and this time can put a negative impact of my performance on my PM. So i m confuse, what should i do?

Since you told them that you are Java person and moreover you took your exam in Java without any Oracle question it is wise to call your PM for a discussion and explain the situation.

Request them to change the project because it is your career decision.
Ask them to act fast and tell them CLEARLY that you are NOT interested
in Oracle work anymore.

Indirectly give them hint that if they don't change project you are ready
quit.

Hope this helps!

If i was there i will say to them that i was passion about Java tech, i believe i was not very much interested with Oracle.

If i was placed in my right interest i will helpfull for the Project and Me.

Say to him that i can sacrifice my technology at any cost..

hope this will help

Hi Sunny

I might differ from the earlier post. When a person says that he is a programmer, it mean he should be proficient in atleast one frontend and one backend.
You can select your own frontend and backend.

Nowadays, a lot of business logic goes into Oracle, if middle tier is not used and you use PL/SQL for it. Just work on Oracle, PL/SQL for one year on actual project and at the end of the year you will be good at java as well as Oracle. In the meantime keep abreast of java. Believe me you will not forget it, if your basics are in place.

But ultimately it is your call. I may hook you up with some good oracle resource i know.
Hope this helps

Adrian.

In my view 1 year will be too long to spend on PL/SQL. If it is 1-3 months okay otherwise stay with Java/JEE if you can.

Sunny, what I have been told (by some senior architects) and what I have learnt over time is that don't bind yourself to one specific technology and don't shun away if you have to work on something that is not your favourite.

Now coming to your question, don't you think you would get an additional technology on your resume if you work on pl/sql for a while and more over, in a project (where you use Oracle as the backend) not all things can be done from Java layer itself. There are a fair number of reasons why you may want to use pl/sql in a project and having said that, if you want to grow as a programmer, you'll have to learn anything from GUI to middleware to backend whenever you get a chance.

I disagree with Arulk if he intends to say pl/sql can be mastered in 1 to 3 months.

Given that there is no hard line dividing what you would do and wouldn't do in a pl/sql project, once you are into it, learning and writing code in pl/sql is just a starting point. There are many other things that you generally do which involve sql-performance tuning, understanding certain aspects of database administration and perhaps having some hands on in DBA if you are into a small company.

If you feel you cannot go-ahead with pl/sql and wish to work only on Java then better speak to your manager before looking out for another opportunity.

I dont agree. Aren't we moving things from db into the middle tier. Coming back to the question only working on PL/SQL for a year with no work on Java can be enough to forgot java skills. Is this suitation familar in other countries also or only in India managers keep moving people as they wish

Sunny,
I don't understand. What's the problem with working on an Oracle project? It will make you a stronger more knowledgeable developer - especially if you have minimal experience in Oracle now.

You won't forget Java even if you don't have any projects for a year. Not all projects are work projects anyway. You can spend an hour of your time each week on Java - reading, writing a practice program, studying for a cert, etc. This is your free time, but it's career development.

Sometimes we love a technology so much that we tend to stick with it and we dont want to move anywhere else. Personally I would certainly not put business logic in a stored procedure or PL/SQL and I find very little need to write code that will need to be compiled and stored in a DB.

However we still need to maintain applications that have such logic in their DB and often I have to google quite a lot to understand what a stored procedure is doing. This experience with PL/SQL will help you understand whats going on on the back end. Try to negotiate with your manager to cut short your stay by 4-6 months and move you back to java.

If however you would like to stick to java you must still negotiate that with your manager or change your company. The latter option must be taken only after giving a lot of thought. Good luck

After going through all the post, I think I can go with PL/SQL, but for a short span of time, but the problem here is, once i move into this project I can not move out at least for next one year. I have recently joined this company, so can not think of a new company again. I left my previous company because of the same reason, they were actually want me to put into Oracle development, even that work was much better than the current one. I don't understand one thing, Why don't theses managers find out what actually an employee equipped with. I am currently staying in Singapore and I belongs to India. Its not easy to switch my job again as i have to apply to work permit pass again for new company. Yesterday I talked with my manager, I said him that my interest is in Java and I have dedicated two starting years of my career in JAVA. I can learn Oracle, but the time i will take to learn that will impact negatively about my performance.I will be like fresher. He said "Ok, I will try to find something better for you". Again today he sent me for training of this new Oracle Project. I am afraid he will put me out of the development work and put me into network management sort of thing. What should i do now ?
