Hi
I have been trying to learn Java but the amount of documentation makes it confusing as to what topics to progress thru'.
Also the differing versions to use in Applets/Browsers.
Should I learn from from the earliest versions and progress up or just learn Swing (1.3 I think)?

I'm not sure, but I vaguely remember reading something about Java 1.3 functionality with IE. In any case, here's some links. The link to the JLS is old, as there's probably a more updated version.

For lack of any better suggestions, after you download the platform of your choice, you could read some tutorials and these forums and then play around with some classes in java.lang, java.math, and java.util. Joining the Cattle Drive, on this site, is also good.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
