I have been asked to learn C language

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi, my name is Jeffry, I'm working as a Java Instructor, many weeks ago, I have been asked to learn JavaScript to teach it in the class. I thought that was OK since JavaScript and Java is similar.

Yesterday, I have been asked to learn C to teach it in the class. Does learn C can make my Java Skill rusty? Until now I'm still learning Java, in fact, I'm planning to take SCJD. Please give your opinion and suggestions.

Thanks

Learning something new will never make you "rusty", more like the opposite!
C is a interesting language to learn... some qualify it as "portable assembler".
Javascript can be deceiving... the similarity to Java is only superficial... look at this example of useful iteration methods

I mean, will my new C skill interference my Java skill?

It is a choice you need to make based on your career aspirations, market demand, etc. It won't hurt to learn but you may think that you could have learnt something else that is more in demand.

What's similar between Java and JavaScript. Apart from the name, they are completely different.

No, I don't think learning C will make your Java rusty. But remember C is a totally different language again. It is written in what Java programmer consider a very old-fashioned style.

Java and JavaScript have similar syntax.

Maybe I'll learn C as a secondary skill and Java as my primary skill. I have been asked to learn only fundamental C.

Does that mean without pointers?

whats the problem. It wont hurt your Java skills in any way. In fact your fundamentals will get stronger, and you'll come to appreciate Java even more. This will make for a good discussion in the interview.

At the level of individual lines of code, Java, JavaScript, and C share a common heritage and are therefore quite similar. In fact, you could argue that C and Java are more similar than Java and JavaScript at that level. For example

int a = 2;
int b = a * 7;
int c = a + b;

is valid and idiomatic code in both Java and C, but not Javascript.

Most developement jobs are Web based and knowing Java Script can be handy.

Thanks for all your reply, I already bought book titled "C for Dummies". Do you already know about that book? give me your opinion about the book please. I'll teach the class in next saturday.
