background color for a JCheckbox

Hi,
Is it possible to set the background colour for a JCheckbox, so that the label bit is on a different colour, but keep the actual box that you tick in the original colour ?
Most of my applet is a nice purple coour, but this checkbox lael is light grey. If I make it purple, you then can't see the tickbox.

Have u tried out
JComboBox_variable.setOpaque(true);
