Hi,

My company will be sending me on L1 to NY. Salary would be approximately 75k. I plan to rent out an apartment in jersey city. Can I get a good 1 BHK in jersey city around 1200-1300 per month. In which areas I should look for the aparments ( as I will be travelling to New york for my Job..probably Broadway). I do not want to save much. Do you think in around 3500-3800, I can live a decent life? I am coming with my Wife and most probably she will not be working.

BHK means Bed room, Hall and Kitchen.

In US, we say living room instead of hall.

Vikas:
Recently my friend left for India. He is a IT professional and was working in NY. He was staying in Jersey city with his family...very near to Train station ...named Journal square...so they didnt even need car. He used to go his office with PATH(train). I had been to her place once and I found many Indians in jersey city. You also have Indian shops over there.
And you are getting good salary...

Good Luck!!!

Ah.

We don't use the term BHK in the US, the common terms are...

Studio (one room + bathroom)
1br (one bedroom, implies 1 bathroom)
2br (2 bedrooms, implies 1 bathrooms)
2br 1.5ba (2 bedrooms, 1-1/2 bathrooms, a half is no shower, toilet only)
2br2ba

etc.

As you said Journal Sqaure is near to PATH..will it be a safe place to live..down town is never going to be crime free.. I would love to stay at a place that has peaceful surroundings even it means more commute time..

Journal square is not one of the safest neighbourhoods around. Heck, funny or not, one guy i know, got mugged twice when he was living in Journal Square.

If you want to live a laidback suburban kind of life, try looking around Woodbridge, Edison or even North Jersey. You might need a car though because not all places are well connected with public transportation.

Journel sq is a nice place to stay for indians. YOu would find many indians over there and its well conneted to NY as well. And the rent over there is also less compare to other places like Exchange place or Pavonia.

Journal square is not at all a nice place. It looks wornout and run down. And it is not safe in the night. Newport in Jersey City is a very good area to stay and it is in river front just close to new port path station. I stayed there for more than a year before moving to India. I wouldnt recommend anyone to stay in Journal Square. Newport rents are on bit higher side - Studio is 1400-1500, 1 BD - 1800 2BD- 2100. It is expensive in newport towers but in nearby areas you can get a good 2BD for 1500 or so and it is worth every penny compared to Journal Square.

Journal square is good for going once a week and having indian food. But for staying longer duration I wouldnt recommend it!

I think I'll just lie down here for a second. And ponder this tiny ad:
