I Have a combobox and a set of custom objects with a getName() method.
I Create a couple of instances of my custom objects and add them to the combobox.
Then i use a customised renderer to display the names of the objects in the combobox......still with me?
ok BUT if the user hasnt select anything in the Combobox i want it to display a default message such as "Please Select an Item"
any suggestion, help or solution would be great

I think if you call the setText() with that but don't add it to the box it will do what you want. Haven't tried it though.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
