I want to pursue a career in Investment Banking.I am currently working as a Technical analyst for a consumer bank. I want to shift to Investment Banking in the same job and eventually move to become a Business Analyst. Any help on resources/articles required. Also an advice on my plan.
I would like to ask you a question to start with. Are you into technology or the business aspect? You requirement that you'd like to be a Business Analyst pretty much says it all but it wouldn't be fair on my part to jump into conclusions right?
Well I have experience with one of the leading banks in the world. Oh by the way I am a Technical Lead with a Software Consultancy right now. Not that I am anywhere near a nerd but I'm someone who loves tech and the nuances that come along ;-) From my tenure with the earlier mentioned firm, I felt I was gettin phased out of the real world where things are happening (technically speaking, that is). Life was cool with em but I was tormented by the fact that there was no real growth career wise. It would take me, or anyone else for that matter, around 8 to 9 years to move up to a Lead position. I'm not so sure about the business side of things. I would always love to get my hands dirty (development or even code) and even on that I got the feeling that I was working on third party propriety tools that I felt would not add any value to my profile. But all said I do have to mention one last thing, having experience on the banking or financial domain help in more ways than one. In the end it is always your call. Good Luck!

Hi Raj, Thanks for your reply. Well i also work as a Techincal Analyst but there is not much to learn technically as i have a busy schedule working on production issues. You must be knowing we wont have much exposure while maintaining existing applications in use. But i am being exposed to real world issues in applications used by my bank(Very large client base) and am getting good business knowledge about Credit Card Systems. So,inorder for me to jump to Business Analyst profile in a Investment Bank, since i do not have business knowledge about Investment Banking Basics,i would like to get into the same Technical Position in a Investment Bank and then over the time, learn the business related stuff. I am kind of not sure if this is the right approach.I am very much interested to become a Business domain expert.
Well I work for investment bank division of one of the biggest banks and I feel moving from pure technology to business is quite a challenge unless you have a masters degree / mba to show off. And you may need significant numbers of experience before things may work out as banks expect a lot in terms of experience qualification in business side... For example my manager is a PHD in in Mathematics & Finance and he designs stuff like pricing models etc while we implement the same. And after working on core stuff like pricing models I can definitely say that the learning curve is quite steep to know the functionality and how it is being used by traders. But if you can take it up as a challenge there is always a possiblity to get what you want.

Hi venkat, Thank you.. The thing is i was not sure of the prerequisites/requirements to shift to Investment Banking. Can you suggest me some ways of knowing the basics of Investment banking Basics. Thats why i wanted to shift to technical work in Investment products like you do now. As its somewhat easy for you to design the systems as you have a good understanding about it rite?
You guys haven't done this much, have ya? I suggest you study this tiny ad:
