Setting JCanvas background to an image?

Does anyone know how to set the BackGround of a JCanvas to an image. lets say a gif image?

I could probably tell you if I knew what a JCanvas was... I don't seem to find it in the standard Java APIs for the 1.3 or 1.4 JDKs.
