how to put icon on desktop

Hello,
I was making one standalone application and now working on its installation process. I would like to do folowing:
1. Would like to put program icon during this process.
2. Would like to add into windows registery for my program existances, which can be reaable in future.
Can somebody give me a good tutorial reference for above.
