Scrollable JTable

How can i make my Table scrollable?
This is the code that i have so far:

resTable = new JTable();
sp = new JScrollPane();
sp.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(775,400));
sp.getViewport().add(resTable);

When the table is rendered it is placed within the scrollpane. This would be ok except that no scrollbars appear even when the table is obviously bigger than the viewable area.
Please can anyone help

I don't see what's wrong with this code.
I created this test program and it ran fine

Maybe something else is causing the problem.
You can also try:

public void setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS )

Ok, i should probably explain a bit more about my code.
My Table is rendered from a custom table model. The actual code i have is below :

resTable = new JTable();//dataValuz, columNamz
resTable.setForeground(maroon);
resTable.setBackground(Color.white);
resTable.setAutoCreateColumnsFromModel(false);
resTable = new JTable(t_data) {
public TableCellRenderer getCellRenderer(int row, int col) {
DefaultTableCellRenderer renderer = new DefaultTableCellRenderer();
renderer.setHorizontalAlignment(ResultTableData.m_columns[col].m_alignment);
return renderer;
}
};
for (int k = 0; k < ResultTableData.m_columns.length; k++) {
TableColumn column = resTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(k);
column.setPreferredWidth(ResultTableData.m_columns[k].m_width);
//column.setMaxWidth(ResultTableData.m_columns[k].m_width);
column.setMinWidth(ResultTableData.m_columns[k].m_width);

sp = new JScrollPane(resTable);
sp.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(775,400));

I also tried to add the line :
public void setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS )
a scrollbar appeared in the scrollpane but didn't allow me to scroll around.
Please can anyone help
