The alternative exit is living on the street. You are threatened to be thrown out of your home and you have no relatives in the US who can help you.
There may be more options than living on the street, although that option is better than murder of your own family :
1) Homeless shelters,
2) Moving to smaller, less expensive apartment,
3) Receiving unemployment, public assistance or taking any type of job whatever it paid. Having family members also take any jobs.
4) He had only been unemployed a few months; banks are not foreclosing so fast and he may have had more time. There may have been equity in the home if he sold it also.
I know it is devastating to fall from higher to lower place in life, but usually it is not permanent if temporary emergency measures like those above can be taken.
There is always, at all times, options to killing your family.
