since using this swing bollox, its just made thing more worse!
anyway, can someone see what i'm doing wrong, the server is not returning the value to the client.

Are there any exceptions getting thrown on either the client or the server? If you are running the applet in a browser, you'll need to pop up the Java Console to see any output like this...

How to open the Java Console differs for browser, platforms, and plugins, but usually it is under the "Tools" menu somewhere, or you can click on the Java Plug-In icon in the system tray if it is there.

Ignoring exceptions is allways a very clever way, to find errors.
Every java-book, -tutorial, -guru tells you, not to catch exceptions and then to hide them, but of course they are all neerds...
