How can I transport data from client to server with "Java web start"?

I believe Java Web Start is just a mechanism for managing download and running of your software. All of the jars in the app are downloaded to a local cache. next time the user runs the app then Web Start will check to see if any of the jars have been updated and download those. Hence the app can be kept up-to-date without having to download the whole thing every time.

As to sending data...you can do this as you would from any program: sockets, talk to a servlet, etc.. You might need to sign the jars and have the user accept them in order to be allowed to communicate.
