Threads are streams of execution. You can have several in a single program. Threads allow you to do several things so they appear to occur simultaneously, like downloading an image and updating a progress bar. Most Swing programs will have a couple of threads: one to update the GUI (the Swing Event Thread), one to handle long tasks (like reading a file) and so on.
You should become familiar with The Java Tutorial. It covers most everything, like Threads: Doing two or more tasks at once and Swing: How to use threads.
