I edited your subject title to be a little more polite. We don't respond well to people demanding answers of us.

I'm sending a private message to answer your query. Please check your private messages.

I was searching an old post (~3 yrs old) of mine, and found it was deleted
although the thread is still there.

My question is: How long the posts will be kept? Who has the
power to delete posts selectively? Moderators? What criteria?

Elizabeth, can you point us to that thread?

Generally speaking, the following people can delete posts:

- the starter of a thread can delete the whole thread,
- the poster of a reply can delete his own reply,
- the bartender(s) of a forum can delete everything in that forum,
- the sheriffs can delete everything they want.

The general criterion is that posts need to follow the "be nice" rule.

There are also some few forums with additional rules, such as the "no company names" rule in the Jobs Discussion forum.

In addition to the "Be Nice" rule there might be specific rules for deleting posts in specific forums; for example, in the forums about Sun certification exams, people sometimes post questions that they copied from the real Sun exams. We delete those because it's illegal to copy them and because we don't want to encourage people to cheat by just learning the answers to questions from the exam by heart.

As far as I know old posts should just stay in the database. Unfortunately, the forum software for JavaRanch is not 100% bugfree (just like any other piece of software...), so if you couldn't retrieve an old post, it could have been a problem with the database or forum software. If you'd point us to the post as Jaikiran asks, we could investigate what's the problem.
