I've decided that I need to develop a Swing app since I can't find what I am looking for anywhere (at least a free one). I will need to be able to put UML type components on a panel however, they only need to be square. But I need to be able to have text on them. Specifically a Header and then 2 to 3 columns in the body.

Although I am familiar with the Swing API enough to develop an application, I've never really gotten into creating my own components. So basically I am looking for suggestions on creating the type of component I described. Should I use JInternalFrame as my base class or go with something more generic like a simple JPanel? Should I start with something a little bit lower in the chain?

I'll also need to be able to drag the coomponent around. That's why I thought using a custom JInternalFrame on a desktop pane would be less work for me. Any suggestions are appreciated.

A JInternalFrame would be less work but would it look right with all those window decorations and stuff? I tried a similar thing once and went with (IIRC) JLabel added to a JPanel, but positioning the components became a problem unless I used absolute component positioning.
