Hi,

Welcome to JavaRanch!

When you write code in Java, or in most languages, you use various libraries. Libraries are like building blocks of capablities: you can assemble some blocks from libraries with some you wrote yourself, and build an application.

"SWT" is a Java library for writing graphical interfaces. It was developed by the Eclipse foundation as a competitor to the standard Java GUI library, "Swing." Swing comes with Java; SWT is an add-on.

You have to use tools to build things. The most important tool for a programmer is a code editor. Programmer's editors often do other things, like compile source code into binary code, help look for bugs, etc. Such an editor-on-steroids is called an Integrated Development Environment. Eclipse is one of these. NetBeans, JBuilder and Oracle J/Developer are others.

I have no idea what "Isaw" is, and neither does Google.

Amanda, if you are just beginning with Java I would strongly recommend you not worry about which IDE to use at the moment. Start with notepad or even something like JCreator (windows only) and learn the basics. Get comfortable with the language, then you can find tools to make your development easier.

Also note that we have a forum dedicated to the discussion of IDE's and other tools so if you have further questions about such things, it's best to ask them there as this forum is specific to GUI related topics.

Welcome to Javaranch! Glad to have you around.
