To find out when a frame is closed, use the addInternalFrameListener to your frames.

To programmatically change change the state of a frame, use the methods setMinimum, setMaximum, setIcon, and setClosed. All of those methods take a single boolean argument, e.g: frame.setMaximum(true) will maximise the frame.
