had had problem w/ legacy swing app rendering all wrong that was mostly resolved with WindowsClassicLAF. still some minor issues. one is that nowadays, JToolBar.Separators are visible as bars in the menu (had not been visible when running app w/ java 1.3)

had thought the way to resolve was to set Separator.shadow and highlight to match the background color, but nothing seems to affect the separators. am setting it to red for now just to see which code changes work and which do not...

in particular frame...

results...

cool, but the seperators still get rendered w/ gray shadow and white highlight.

got thinking that this might be case of "Separator.shadow" affecting just JSeparator, but this produces same ignore-erick's-settings behavior for both separators...

after some reading of javadoc, this idea looks silly, but i'm futzing, trying to get something to work

a lot of problems get solved on the way to the pepsi machine (or whatever). got thinking about where my calls to put(String,Color) were actually putting things. made changes...

also noticed by nosing around in WindowsToolBarSeparatorUI that "Separator.shadow" was not in fact the property needed.

all is good now and the toolbar separators have faded back into invisibility as was desired.
