Hi,

I am a Java SWING developer and have been following the AJAX for some time now, from the articles and Discussion forums we normally get a impression that AJAX has evident advantages over traditional SWING based applications and that AJAX is all set to phase off SWING slowly, I am a bit confused as I still find lot of projects in Java SWING. Can anyone give me a clear picture.

Sorry if this post is not very relevant

Thanks
Hari

Ajax runs inside a web browser, and is based on web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It is not a new GUI technology, but a new way for web apps to interact with the user and the server. It does not fundamentally go beyond the GUI capabilities that browsers have had before, so I find it hard to believe that Ajax should replace traditional GUIs, where browsers haven't done so before.

As Ulf mentioned, AJAX is not a new technology but a (sort-of) new way to use existing technologies together. The primary aim is to replicate functionality you get in a desktop application - mainly not having to update the entire screen every time something changes. My feeling is that AJAX may be used in place of a Swing UI for some situations. A more common thing I have been seeing and hearing about is using a .NET front end on a Java server-side app.

This should probably be qualified as being a discussion about GUIs used with web apps. I seriously doubt AJAX will ever replace my "traditional" GUI seeing as it's a desktop application.
