How can I tell in which direction a scrollbar is being moved? I am using a scroll bar to manipulate a simple calculation.

Attach an adjustment Listener to this ScrollBar and then you will get the Adjustment Event. Adjustment event has a method getAdjustmentType()which will give you the type as increment/decrement.
Look into the API for more details.
