Hey is there a swing implementation of
microsofts paper clip guy ? I a user
guidance tool for a complex app at work.

Yikes! I sure hope not. I hate the paper clip guy. Seriously, though I don't think there is one. Seriously though again, I hate the paper clip guy.

I hate him, too. I find him much too intrusive. Whenever you try to do any little thing in Word, or anything else that uses that thing, you first have to deal with this annoying little popup window that has, all of sudden, grabbed your focus. I hate it.

Again - find him incredibly annoying!

However... I'm likely to need something vaguely similar some time the not-too-distant future. Some kind of friendly user guidance thing, a bit more context-sensitive than a 'tip of the day' type thing, but less... erm... irritating (?) than the paper clip.

Would be interested to hear your solution.

OpenOffice's little light bulb thing isn't quite as bad. Personally, when I need help, I'll ask for it. I don't need a guided tour. But I am sure I am in the monority.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
