How do I make the paddle?

My partner and I were assigned to make a 'pong' like game, but instead of bouncing the balls, we catch them. This was the code he passed to me, and I'm supposed to make the paddle and catch the dropping balls.
This totally does not look like his work and I'd make him rewrite it, but as the deadline is tomorrow, I guess there's just no time.
My question is, how do I write the paddle? He has no paint method. I was planning on using making a rectangle over the balls and checking if they intersected with the paddle. Then increment score and redrawing the ball to make it disappear...
Suggestions please?
