Mac and Swing through a browser - ellipsis on everything??!

Ok, at the company I work for, we've got this softare that "runs on everything" - and actually, it does. Further, it can be launched as a stand-alone program, or through a browser (ie: point to our device with a webserver on it, and it will bring up the same code running in a browser window).

When using it stand-alone, everything is fine on all operating systems. But, when run through a browser (I'm using Firefox on all platforms), while Solaris, Linux, and Windows don't have an issue, we've noticed that, despite using the same fonts and resolution, the Mac seems to truncate and use ellipsis for almost everything. The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to be important whether or not there's enough space!

For example, we have a dialog with an OK and a Cancel button. On the Mac, the OK shows up just as "..." and Cancel shows up as "Can..."

A message label at the bottom of the screen will display "Some message" as something like "Some mess..." but will, in the same place, display "Some longer, more elaborate and wordy message" as "Some longer, more elaborate and wor..."

And, of course, the Navigator tree has all sorts of items, they all end with ellipsis, even though they're all notably different lengths compared to each other, and despite the fact that there's plenty of room.

So, anyone know what's going on here? Why is this happening, and how do I work around this?
