I'm convinced by your replies on some pastes.

I've asked a similar question two years ago. What I've done are:

1 Learn how to use Swing components, layouts. The books before Java Desktop Live seem all in this category. I find Java Tutorial's Creating a GUI with JFC/Swing is enough for this.

2 Learn some guidlines on building GUI. I read several chapters of book Java Look And Feel Design Guidlines

3 Learn multi-thread. Basicaly I read articles in java.net on this issue. And apply SwingWorker in my application.

What else?

With your FRC book, it seems more things need to be learned. You are Swing gurus, would you mind answering this question once more?

Thanks in advance.

Read more guidelines on user interface design. Not just desktop apps, any kind of user interface. Learn how to choose colors, how to use spacing and contrast. You'll find most valuable information in books about fonts and typesetting.

Those things need to be learned if you want to create a customized, awe-inspiring user interface. Unfortunately, it does not come for free. We give you the techniques and programming tools to implement such UIs but we cannot, at least in this book, help you with the visual design part (although the last chapter of the book is a quick introduction to this.)
