Coming from a Delphi background http://www.torry.net/ is one of the many sources for free components, lots of them open source.

Swing requires a lot more scaffolding to be erected than I am used to (perhaps one of the frameworks helps?). Not being too familiar with the Java community I am wondering if there is an equivalent index/storage web site for open source components? [For example rather than reinventing the wheel I would like to find source for an ip address data entry component.]

Any recommendations for an index site?

A sizable index is at http://java-source.net/, and there's of course lots of good Java stuff at apache.org: http://projects.apache.org/indexes/language.html#Java (some of which is listed on java-source.net as well).

In general, that is a very useful site, thank you very much for posting.

Going on it's thorough coverage it appears there are not any open source component sets which extend (rather than rewrite) the swing classes and components...

I found this article interesting. It introduces two useful classes that extend Swing, and provides some ideas in how to go about it in general.
