We use JCaptcha to generate a challenge/response image to ensure a user is filling in forms on our site. JCaptcha leverages a random font generator. When we upgraded to JVM 1.5, we started getting undecipherable characters. We have isolated the bad fonts being used to those in the Hershey family. Is there any way to instruct the JVM to ignore this family of fonts?

I don't think that Hershey is a font that is shipped with the JVM. It's most probably installed on your system, and the JVM is now picking it up as an installed font. So you'll need to uninstall the font from your system to prevent the JVM from picking it up. However, if you need this font for some other application on the system, you'll need to look in the JCaptcha documentation or source to see if JCaptcha has some kind of configurable option to specify fonts to use or not use, or if you'll have to customize it yourself to do this.
