I will suggest that first you cover the book-"java in 21 days",swing part
and then move ahead.

Not convinced about the Java in 21 days book, unless it has improved since the copy I have (3rd edition).

Core Java volumes 1 and 2 by Horstmann and Cornell have some excellent chapters on Swing (and on many many other aspects of Java) with all chapters being well written with plenty of easy to understand examples. I highly recommend both volumes.

Core Java volumes 1 and 2 by Horstmann have lots of content on Swing and AWT. You could alternatively refer to:
1. Swing Guide by Herbrt Schildt
2. Definitive Guide to Java Swing by John Zukowski
3. Java Swing O'REILLY
The Java Tutorial site also has lots of resources- Swing Tutorial
