using html or applet

how should one decide what to use, html or applet for any application which has a fornt end and servlet at the back end

The rule of thumb I use is to use HTML if at all possible. Only use applets or complicated JavaScript if (after your best try) you can't convince your customer that a HTML UI will be more flexible, more robust, faster to download, and will work with more browsers. If you have the choice, and your UI doesn't need any fancy drag-n-drop or dynmic graphics etc., use HTML.

hi,
We suppose to decide on based on the requirement. Basically if you want security or if you need any java oriented work, then you can go for Applet.
Again i told you that its purely bsaed on requirement.
